Scholarships and Financial Aid

Our department offers a number of scholarships for students pursuing a degree in geography, geology, geospatial sciences or planning. These scholarships are designed to support your studies at Missouri State, reward excellence in the classroom and assist students with financial need.

You may also qualify for additional University-wide scholarships or financial aid. The office of student financial aid provides information about University scholarships, grants and loans.

The department of geography, geology and planning also offers a limited number of graduate assistantships for students pursuing a master's degree in a related field.

Bill and Maret Cheek Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time student majoring in Geography or Planning, with preference going to Planning students. Student must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a Departmental GPA of 3.25. Preference also given to students involved in professional organizations. All else equal, financial need may be considered.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

D. Kent Smith Memorial Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to full-time junior or greater majoring in Geology with a minimum of 25 hours complete of required courses for Geology degree. Must have a GPA of 3.0 in these degree courses and overall. Preference given to students with no other scholarships.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Fagerlin-Johnson-Moeglin Field Studies Scholarship

Selection criteria

At least two scholarships awarded annually to students participating in a Field Studies Course as part of their degree program within the Geography, Geology, and Planning Department.  At least one scholarship will go to a Geography or Planning majors enrolled in GRY 470 or its equivalent during the Summer or Spring session and One to Geology or Earth Science Education majors enrolled in GLG 412 or 413 or its equivalent during the Summer or Spring session. Preference given based on academic performance with previous three semesters being more heavily weighted.

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Jim K. Bass Field Studies Scholarship

Selection criteria

At least two scholarships will be awarded annually with a value of at least $2,000 each.  Additional awards may be given at the discretion of the committee, but awards must be no less than $2,000 each.  Awards will be given to undergraduate students majoring in Geology that will be enrolled in a required Field Studies Course.  Students must submit a Personal Statement explaining their motivation and interest in the field of Geology.  Preference will be given to need.

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

John N. and Kathleen Griesemer Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to an incoming freshman or transfer student seeking a degree in the Geography, Geospatial Sciences, and Planning Department. Freshman will be considered based on their academic credentials, leadership, and aptitude tests, while transfer students must have a transfer GPA of 3.0.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Kenneth C. Thomson Memorial Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time Geology major. Consideration of academic performance in the Geology field with greater weight for course taken in the previous three semesters. Preference for those expressing interest in caves and karst terrain through completion of GLG 350 or its equivalent or GLG 499 or its equivalent. Preference also given to those not receiving scholarships from the same department.

Milton D. Rafferty Scholarship Fund

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time sophomore or greater majoring in Geography or Planning with an overall GPA of 3.0 and a departmental GPA of 3.25.

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Paul L. & Alice W. Redfearn Undergraduate Research Award

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to an undergraduate student majoring in Biology, Geography, or another area of Natural History within the College of Natural and Applied Sciences. Student can be enrolled in graduate courses. Student that conceives an original research project on the natural history of the Ozarks and will receive the award during semester that research will be conducted.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Vincent E. Kurtz Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to full-time sophomore or greater majoring in a program in Geography, Geology, and Planning with at least 12 hours complete in degree program. Must have an overall and departmental GPA of 3.0. Preference given to students not receiving any other departmental scholarships.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Warren C. and Vivian M. Rauch Memorial Award

Selection criteria

One $1,200.00 cash award (or whatever amount is available if it is below $1,200.00) will be provided to an undergraduate student seeking a degree in Geology that is enrolled to take a summer field studies geology course (GLG 412 or 413). The selected recipient will receive a single cash award that will help offset the costs of tuition and course fees for a field studies geology course through another university that allows the credits to transfer automatically to Missouri State University.
