Research and professional interests

Almost all of my current research derives from an interest in the historical geography of Yellowstone National Park including:

  • Documenting the evolution of a shared public image of Yellowstone from terra incognita to "place."
  • The role of Howard Eaton in promoting saddle-horse riding-and-camping tours in Yellowstone and other western parks as part of a "national park experience."
  • How Yellowstone’s Howard Eaton Trail reveals the evolving mission of the National Park Service to provide recreation and transportation in its parks.
  • Using re-photography and photo-pairs to understand change and stability in cultural and physical landscapes over time.
  • Using historical geographic information systems, also known as GIS, to map the history of Yellowstone trails.
